ライオンの解剖

ＫＷＳのボランティアを始めて一日目、午後になっていきなりライオンの死後解剖が入った。午前中あまりにもすることがなくてつまらなかったので、私は大喜び。獣医セクションに死体が担ぎ込まれた時には、もうあたりにかなりライオンの死臭が充満していた。よく見ると、ライオンの死体にはおびただしい数のダニが！宿主が死んでしまったので、新しい宿主を見つけようと必死になって死体の上をウヨウヨしている。１匹の動物にこんなに数多くのダニがたかっているのは初めて見た。成虫もいれば、幼虫もいれば、みんなそろって手をワサワサ動かしている。ひー、気持ち悪いよー！（あすかさんは虫が大の苦手）。

どうやらこのライオンはアティ・リバーという場所で、モイ大統領のダチョウ牧場のダチョウを合計５６羽を食べたらしい。そして、外見で見るかぎり、射殺されていた。そりゃー、モイのダチョウに手を出したら射殺されるよ・・・。どうみても外傷は弾丸の後しかないのに、どうして死後解剖する必要があるのかと思ったが、みんな暇だったのでナイロビ国立公園の中に持って行って解剖することになった。どうやら国立公園内だと、解剖後にそこいら辺に死体を放置できるから楽らしい（ハイエナとかに食べられるから）。

解剖は観光客が見えない小高い丘の上で行われた。メスで切るのかなーなんて思ったら、でっかいナイフでライオンの皮が豪快に切り込まれた。皮が分厚いからメスなんて使っていられないのね・・・。しかし！なんて筋肉をしているのだろう、ライオンは。メスだったのにも関わらず、その筋肉の強じんなこと。手で触ってみて、弾力のすごさと大きさに感動してしまった。それに肉球も爪もなんと大きいのか。うーん、この手で平手打ちを食らったら死ぬな・・・。

死後解剖の結果、弾丸はめちゃくちゃに何発も発砲されていたことが分かった。死因となったのがこめかみの近くから背骨に向かって打たれた弾。背骨と脊髄が完全に破壊されていた。その他にも弾は肺や肝臓も貫通していたし、後ろ足にもいつくも弾が貫通していた。私達が解剖をしている間ずっとレンジャーの一人が熱心にライオンの体から脂肪をナイフで切りとっていた。皮膚の下の脂肪をすべて取り終わると、内臓のまわりの脂肪を丁寧に切り取り始めた。

「お前、いったいそんなに脂肪を集めて何するんだ？」

不思議そうに獣医さんが聞いた。

「いやー、友達に頼まれているんだよ。ライオンの脂肪を鍋で溶かして、子供の胸に塗ると強い子供に育つらしい。」

ホントかい、そりゃ・・・？

Lion Post Mortem

Female lioness estimated 3 years old. Shot near Athi River. Problem animal, raiding ostrich farm.

Gunshot entry wound on right proximal mandible, exit wound on dorsal aspect of the neck. Massive hemorrhage seen in the right mandibular area with shattered vertebral column at the level of the atlas.

Lung – Gunshot wound penetrating one of the lobe. Shot lobes heavily congested with oozing blood from cut surface. Lobes without gunshot wound emphysematous when palpated, indicating compensation of lung function leading to accumulation of excess gas in the alveoli. Infarct area seen in some of the lobes.

Liver– Abnormal color, brownish Yellow, resembling jaundice.
Gallbladder – Completely torn away by gunshot wound, bile content spilled on the liver.

Kidney – Congested and blood vessels on surface constricted.

Heart – Normal

Reproductive System– Normal, smooth in texture, probably never given birth.

Other Remark – External braded wound on medial aspect of right thigh, probably by a snare. Enlarged lymph node on left medial thigh, indicating infection prior to gunshot wound. Entry wound on medial aspect of pelvic limb near attachment of the adductor muscle. Entry wound on the left distal pelvic limb (shattered carpal bones, compound fracture of proximal fibula and tibula) with bullet direction traveling towards proximal aspect of the pelvic limb.

Cause of death – shuttered vertebral column and damage to the cisternae magnum and spinal cord, leading to somatic death.
